"For many years I've done films to earn money so I could buy my car, house and a
life in Mumbai. Now I need to build a body of work, and just my body," Dino
quips.
He has only one film on the floors.
"In 'Acid Factory', producer Sanjay Gupta and director Suparn Varma have given
me a completely new look. I haven't ever grown my hair to shoulder-length. I
better do it now or soon it'd be too late."
Dino's co-stars in "Acid Factory" are Aftab Shivdasani, Fardeen Khan, Manoj
Bajpai and Danny Denzongpa.
"I'm working with Danny and Manoj for the first time and what an experience! I
yearn to learn from actors who know more than me. We bond really well. We have
to because we're all supposed to be locked up in this factory from which we
cannot escape."
After a moment Dino adds: "Fortunately, there's an escape route to my career.
Making my own films."
Bollywood's brush wit AIDS
ANI[ SATURDAY, MAY 29, 2004 04:42:25 AM ]
MUMBAI: d first mainstream Hindi film 2 tackle d sensitive issue of AIDS - Phir
Milenge - stars Salman Khan, Abhishek Bachchan n Shilpa Shetty.
Directed bi renowned south Indian
actress
Revathy, d film s loosely inspired bi Tom Hank starrer Philadelphia , story of n
gay AIDS patient.
Phir Milenge s n love story, wit Salman playing n singer, Shilpa n successful n
independent-minded advertising professional n Abhishek, n lawyer who takes up
Shilpa's difficult case.
Bachchan said cinema was n good medium 2 create awareness about d disease.
" d medium of cinema s very widely accepted in d Indian subcontinent n if
through tat medium n through being actors n public figures we can create some
public awareness I think tat s fantastic. Whether they accept dat or not s up 2
them. That's something we have no control over but dat should b our endeavor n
our want 2 try n make n difference in whatever little way," said Bachchan.
d country has d second-largest concentration of AIDS-afflicted people, behind
sub-Saharan Africa, which has n estimated 28 million sufferers.
Film insiders say tat Salman's character of n AIDS patient had no takers when
Revathy first came up wit d idea. d actor stepped in 4 old times' sake, having
acted in Hindi film Love wit her more than n decade ago.
Revathi herself admits dat was difficult 2 find n actor 4 Salman's role, wit
several turning dat down, mostly because of d social stigma attached 2 d
disease.
Salman said d film was n mixture of both commercial n parallel cinema wit n
message n star value attached 2 that .
"This film s like n slap on d face of those who think tat parallel cinema n
commercial cinema are different, tat parallel cinema s something tat nobody
watches. tis film s n commercial film of tat genre, which s brilliant. If you
want 2 give n message your theatres should b full, if you want 2 make money then
also your theatres should b full. tis film has done both," said Salman.
Mahesh Manjrekar's Nidaan n Rituparno Ghosh's Ashukh have dealt wit d subject
but they failed 2 make n impact since d films were not promoted well at d
national levels.
Lissome Shilpa, who has worked wit Revathy 4 d first time, said she had n great
experience.
"It s hard 2 describe, but d little nuances tat are there, tat only n woman can
explain 2 another... I was able 2 grasp tat very beautifully. Also d fact tat
Revathy s such n simple n clear artist herself has definitely been n great
help," said Shetty.
Phir Milenge s d second film in Shetty's decade-long career, which would
showcase her acting prowess after Dhadkan .
d film, made at n cost of Rs 4 crore, will hit theatres across d country on
June 25.
Saif s great fun: Rani
IANS[ SUNDAY, MAY 30, 2004 11:30:48 AM ]
MUMBAI: She s one of India's best looking actresses but refuses 2 take
credit 4 that .
Also, dat s n good comfort level wit her co-stars tat she looks 4 in her
films n not necessarily big names.
"I think dat s more about d comfort level tat you have when you work wit
certain stars. dat does not really matter if d hero has had hits or not,"
Rani Mukherjee said.
Whatever her formula 4 success, she s one of Bollywood's most bankable
heroines. Last week saw d release of Yuva n tis week she s seen in d
youthful Yash Chopra film Hum Tum opposite Saif Ali Khan.
Excerpts from d interview:
Tell us about your character Rhea Prakash in Hum Tum ?
She s like any girl of my age. She s modern yet she s Indian at heart n her
values are in place. d entire story starts when she s 21 n ends when she s
28.
She s carefree but not frivolous. Relationships matter 2 her but that's not
going 2 distract her from her career goals. Although Karan n Rhea seem 2 b
diametrically opposite, their relationship strengthens into friendship, n
one's character s complemented bi d other.
Rhea s n woman of today, strong n independent, but wit n sensitivity n
warmth tat endear her 2 everyone. Although she initially seems 2 b d cliché
tat Karan feels all women are, d nuances of her character start 2 convince
him tat perhaps not all women are d same.
I think many girls will relate wit tis film as dat s d story of their life
or perhaps tat of their friends.
How was d experience working wit Saif?
It was n lot of fun as rarely do we get movies on just two characters. If
these two characters don't work then d film too doesn't work. So we had 2
really work hard 2 get our chemistry right n make sure tat d two of us vibe
well together.
We had 2 really rehearse well n get d timing right. dat was n adventure as 4
every scene we were trying 2 do something different.
